Why “The Water Tower”?
“The Water Tower Therapy Centre takes its name from the striking Grade II listed building we call home. Completed in 1903, Benfleet Water Tower stands ninety feet tall (around 27 metres) on the high ground overlooking the River Thames — built not for architectural note, as one early critic remarked, but for genuine purpose: to store water and serve the surrounding area from its commanding position.
Over more than a century, the tower has quietly reinvented itself. Its original 40,000-gallon tank served the local community until 1957, after which the building found new life as a home for radio and broadcasting equipment, hosting names like the BBC and Essex Radio from its unique vantage point above the town.
Today, we’re proud to be the latest chapter in the tower’s story — a place that has always adapted to serve the community around it, now offering a place of safety, reflection and growth. From the top of the tower, on a clear day, you can see all the way to Tower Bridge. From the therapy room, we hope our clients find a similarly clear perspective on their own path forward.”
